Biological Reductionism

Biological reductionism is the approach of explaining complex psychological phenomena — including thoughts, emotions, behaviours, and mental disorders — by reducing them to their most basic biological components, such as neurons, neurotransmitters, hormones, and brain structures. The underlying assumption is that if we fully understand the biological machinery of the brain and body, we can explain all of psychology.

What Does Biological Reductionism Look Like?

Biological reductionism takes many forms in psychology. The serotonin hypothesis of depression is one of the most well-known examples: this hypothesis proposes that depression results from insufficient serotonergic activity in the brain. This reductionist explanation led directly to the development of Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs) such as fluoxetine (Prozac), which increase serotonin availability in synaptic gaps by blocking its reuptake. Because SSRIs helped many people with depression, this seemed to confirm the biological model.

Similarly, aggression has been explained in reductionist terms through testosterone — higher testosterone levels in males have been associated with increased aggression, though the relationship is correlational rather than clearly causal. Anxiety disorders have been linked to overactivity in the amygdala. ADHD has been framed as a dopamine dysregulation disorder.

Strengths of Biological Reductionism

  • Biological reductionism has produced substantial practical benefits. It has led to effective pharmacological treatments for depression, schizophrenia, anxiety disorders, ADHD, and other conditions, reducing suffering for millions of people. It allows precise, measurable interventions rather than the vague or untestable claims of some other approaches. Reductionism also aligns well with the goals of scientific explanation -- breaking complex phenomena into simpler, more tractable components.

Limitations of Biological Reductionism

  • Despite these benefits, biological reductionism faces significant criticism. First, it oversimplifies. The serotonin hypothesis of depression, for instance, has been substantially challenged -- research has shown that SSRIs do not always outperform placebos, and that many people improve without medication through therapy or exercise alone. A 2022 umbrella review by Moncrieff and colleagues found no consistent evidence that depression is caused by lowered serotonin levels. This suggests that reducing depression to a single neurotransmitter system is an oversimplification of a condition influenced by cognitive, social, and contextual factors.
    Second, biological reductionism can lead to deterministic thinking -- the belief that behaviour is fixed by biology, which undermines the relevance of psychological and social interventions. Third, it may lead to medicalising normal human experience -- treating grief, social anxiety, or low mood as diseases requiring pharmaceutical intervention.
