A multinational company is a large business organization that operates in more than one country. Usually has headquarters in one country but maintains production facilities, offices, or branches in several other countries.
Reasons for Becoming Multinational
- Access to larger markets — selling in multiple countries increases potential customers
- Lower production costs — moving to countries with cheaper labour or resources
- Access to raw materials — operating where essential resources are available
- Avoiding trade barriers — establishing production within a country to avoid import taxes
Advantages of MNCs
- Achieve economies of scale
- Access to international markets
- Diversify risk by operating in different regions
Disadvantages & Criticism
- May exploit cheap labour in developing countries
- Local businesses struggle to compete
- Environmental damage where regulations are weak
